Frequently Asked Questions.

About Therapeutic Coaching

What is therapeutic coaching?

Therapeutic coaching combines the insight and emotional understanding often associated with therapy with the forward momentum and practical strategies of coaching.

In our sessions we explore the patterns shaping your thoughts, emotions, behaviours, and relationships - while also developing practical ways to approach situations differently.

The aim is not simply insight, but meaningful change in how you live, relate to others, and move through life.

How is therapeutic coaching different from therapy?

Therapy often focuses on understanding and healing past experiences. Coaching typically focuses on goals, behaviour change, and future direction.

Therapeutic coaching sits between the two approaches.

We may explore past experiences when they help explain current patterns, but the work is primarily focused on helping you move forward - developing tools, perspectives, and approaches that support lasting change in your life and relationships.

What does a life coach do, and how is therapeutic coaching different?

A life coach helps you explore what’s happening in your life, gain clarity about what you want, and move forward with greater confidence and direction.

Often, however, the biggest obstacle isn’t the situation itself - it’s the way we relate to it. Self-doubt, overthinking, old beliefs about ourselves, or familiar emotional patterns can quietly hold us back, even when we know what we want to change.

My approach is therapeutic coaching, which brings an additional layer of depth. Alongside exploring goals and next steps, we also take time to understand the patterns, beliefs, and emotional responses that may be shaping your experience. This allows us not only to move forward, but to do so with greater self-understanding and more lasting change.

Can I combine coaching with therapy or other wellbeing support?

Yes. Some people work with a psychotherapist alongside therapeutic coaching.

Therapy can provide deeper emotional processing, while coaching often focuses on applying insight and creating change in everyday life.

If you are currently in therapy, we can simply ensure the two approaches complement one another.

What kinds of issues can therapeutic coaching help with?

People come to therapeutic coaching for many reasons, including:

• anxiety, stress, or overthinking
• persistent self-doubt or an inner critic
• feeling stuck or uncertain about direction
• navigating life transitions or important decisions
• relationship difficulties or recurring patterns
• burnout or emotional exhaustion
• wanting to understand themselves more deeply while creating change

Who do you work with?

I work with adults who are interested in understanding themselves more deeply and making meaningful changes in their lives or relationships.

This includes individuals navigating personal challenges, as well as couples who want to improve communication, work through difficulties, or think more intentionally about their relationship and future together.

When might therapeutic coaching not be the right support?

Therapeutic coaching is not a substitute for specialist mental health care.

If you are experiencing acute mental health difficulties — such as severe depression, active trauma, eating disorders, or crisis situations — more specialist clinical support may be more appropriate.

If you’re unsure, you’re very welcome to reach out and we can talk through what might be most helpful.

Sessions

How long is each session?

Most sessions last 50 minutes.

Sometimes sessions may be slightly shorter or longer depending on what feels most helpful, and we can always discuss this together if needed.

What happens during a session?

Sessions are thoughtful, dynamic conversations where we explore what is happening in your life, the patterns shaping your thoughts or relationships, and the challenges you are facing.

Alongside conversation, sessions may include exercises, reflections, or psycho-educational insights that help you approach situations differently in everyday life.

The aim is to combine understanding with practical change.

How often do sessions take place?

Most people begin with weekly or fortnightly sessions, depending on what feels helpful and manageable.

We can adjust the rhythm as the work progresses.

How many sessions will I need?

This varies from person to person.

Some people come for a short period to work through a specific issue, while others prefer longer-term support as they make broader changes in their lives.

Many clients begin noticing shifts within the first few sessions, with deeper change developing over time.

Where do sessions take place?

Sessions can take place:

in person at my practice in Bristol
online via video call

Both options offer a calm and supportive space for the work.

Do I need to prepare anything before sessions?

No preparation is required.

Some people like to reflect on what they’d like to discuss beforehand, but you’re also welcome to simply arrive with whatever feels most present for you that day.

Will there be things to do between sessions?

Often I may suggest small reflections, exercises, or ways of applying what we’ve discussed in everyday life.

These are always designed to support change without becoming overwhelming.

Pricing & Logistics

How much do sessions cost?

Sessions are £85 per session.

I keep a small number of reduced-rate sessions available each month for those who might not otherwise be able to access this work. If this would be helpful, please feel free to get in touch.

What if I need to reschedule a session?

If you need to reschedule, I ask for 48 hours’ notice so the appointment can be offered to someone else.

Can I pause sessions if life becomes busy?

Yes. Life can be unpredictable, and we can pause or adjust the schedule if needed.

Getting Started

What happens during the consultation?

The consultation is a short, relaxed conversation where we explore what has brought you here and what you’re hoping might change.

It’s also an opportunity to see whether this way of working feels like the right fit.

There’s no pressure to commit - it’s simply a chance to talk things through.

I feel nervous about starting. Is that normal?

Yes, completely.

Many people feel some uncertainty before beginning. Talking about personal challenges with someone new can feel like a significant step.

My aim is to create a calm, thoughtful space where you can take that step at your own pace.

What if I’m not sure what I need yet?

That’s very common.

Many people arrive simply knowing that something in their life or relationship isn’t working in the way it once did.

Part of our work together is developing clarity about what matters most to you and how you’d like things to change.

Expectations & Outcomes

What kind of results can I expect from therapeutic coaching?

People come to therapeutic coaching with different goals, so the changes they experience will vary.

Many clients begin to notice shifts such as greater clarity about what’s happening in their lives, feeling less overwhelmed by their thoughts, and approaching situations with more confidence and perspective.

Over time, people often find that patterns in their thinking, behaviour, or relationships begin to change in ways that make everyday life feel more manageable and meaningful.

How quickly will I see change?

This varies from person to person.

Some people notice small but important shifts within the first few sessions - such as seeing situations more clearly or responding differently to familiar challenges.

Deeper change tends to develop gradually as new ways of thinking and responding become more established.

Still have a question?

You’re very welcome to get in touch.

If you’re unsure whether therapeutic coaching might be helpful, the best place to begin is a conversation.
